Indiana Dunes National Park

Welcome to Indiana Dunes National Park, formerly known as Indiana Dunes National Lake shore but, that was changed in 2019 when it became a National Park.

Legislation signed on February 15, 2019, approved the official name change of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, creating Indiana’s first National Park, Indiana Dunes National Park. One of the top ten most visited properties in the National Park Service.

This means that Indiana Dunes has always been a national park by law and practice, whether called a “National Park” or a “National Lakeshore.” Like most of the Midwest parks of the N.P. S., Indian Dunes National Park does not offer climbing. It does have two “summits,” Mount Baldy and Mount Tom. The adjacent state park also has a “three dunes challenge,” and you can get stickers and other souvenirs for bragging about it. The two parks also offer hiking and other outdoor activities.

Spread out perfectly along the shores of Lake Michigan, with some inland bogs and other “natural” areas. Not to mention, residential neighborhoods, vacation homes, railroads, highways, and . . . three steel mills. A range of sand dunes, that receive a steadily supply of winds most of the time – – that’s how the dunes got here, after all – – so Indiana Dunes National Lake shore is a good place for paragliding, kite flying, remote-controlled aircraft flying, and other such activities. There’s also some biking, and hiking, if you slow down there’s a remarkable diversity of flowers and birds. Indiana Dunes is only about two hours from Chicago and Indianapolis, so come on down and bring the family. Take a look, at some more motivational links, to help inspire a trip…
